A Parent's Guide to NCAA Eligibility and Recruiting — What to Know Early

Most of what's written about NCAA recruiting is aimed at the athlete. This is aimed at you.

The Timeline Starts Earlier Than You Think

Eligibility planning effectively starts in 9th grade, not junior year.

  • Core courses accumulate from freshman year

  • Division I locks in 10 of 16 core courses before senior year even begins

  • Coaches are often researching athletes years before they're legally allowed to contact them

What You Can Actually Control

  • Course selection, confirmed with your student's counselor every year

  • Registering with the Eligibility Center early

  • Keeping your own understanding of the rules current

What You Can't Control (and Shouldn't Try To)

  • When coaches are legally allowed to contact your athlete

  • The outcome of recruiting

A Note on Involvement

Being informed and organized genuinely helps. Being the primary point of contact with coaches tends to work against your student.

Bottom Line

Your biggest leverage point is early academic tracking, not late-stage involvement.
