NCAA Eligibility & Compliance — The Complete Guide
NCAA Eligibility & Compliance — The Complete Guide
Eligibility is the single most common thing that trips up talented athletes — not talent, not performance, but a missed core course or a GPA calculated differently than expected. This hub breaks eligibility and compliance down by division and by topic, so you know exactly what applies to you and when it needs to happen.
Start Here: Which Division Are You Targeting?
Eligibility requirements are different at every level. Find your path below.
NCAA Division I Initial Eligibility Requirements
The most demanding path: 16 core courses, a 2.3 minimum core-course GPA, and the 10/7 rule that locks in 10 of your grades before senior year even starts. Read this first if D1 is on your list — the timing requirement catches more families off guard than anything else on this page.
NCAA Division II Initial Eligibility Requirements
Similar framework to D1 — 16 core courses, Eligibility Center certification — but a more forgiving 2.2 GPA floor and no 10/7 timing rule, giving athletes a bit more flexibility if grades improve later in high school.
NCAA Division III — coming soon
D3 doesn't use the NCAA Eligibility Center for domestic academic standards — each school sets its own admissions requirements.
NAIA Eligibility — coming soon
A different governing body with its own two-of-three qualifying system.
What "Eligibility" Actually Covers
Eligibility isn't one single requirement — it's a few different reviews happening at once:
Academic eligibility — your core courses, core-course GPA, transcript, and proof of graduation
Athletics eligibility — your sports participation history and any activities the NCAA reviews
Amateurism status — separate from academics, this covers whether your athletic activity before college affects your eligibility
The Non-Negotiables, Across Every Division
Only NCAA-approved core courses count toward your core-course GPA — not every class on your schedule, and not your full transcript GPA.
Registration timing matters — get set up with the NCAA Eligibility Center early rather than waiting until you have an offer.
Your counselor is your single most important resource in this process.
Compliance offices exist to help — the compliance staff at any school recruiting you can answer school-specific questions.
Common Mistakes That Cost Athletes Their Eligibility
Assuming report-card GPA and NCAA core-course GPA are the same number
Not checking whether a class is actually on the school's NCAA-approved core course list
Missing the Division I 10/7 deadline without realizing those grades were being locked in
Waiting until senior year to register with the Eligibility Center
