NCAA Division I Initial Eligibility Requirements — The Complete Breakdown

If you're a high school athlete hoping to compete at the Division I level, academic eligibility isn't something to figure out senior year — it's something that gets decided by the classes you're taking right now.

The Short Version

  1. Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center

  2. Complete 16 NCAA-approved core courses

  3. Meet the 10/7 requirement

  4. Earn a minimum 2.3 core-course GPA

  5. Submit your final transcript and proof of graduation

  6. Receive Academic and Athletics Certification

There is currently no standardized test score requirement for Division I initial eligibility.

Breaking Each Requirement Down

1. Register With the NCAA Eligibility Center

Do this early — don't wait until you have an offer in hand.

2. Complete 16 Core Courses

The distribution requirement:

Subject Area: Years Required

English (or native language): 4 years

Math (Algebra I or higher): 3 years

Science: 2 years

Additional English, Math, or Science: 1 year

Social Science: 2 years

Additional core courses (world language, comparative religion, philosophy, etc.): 4 years

Important: check your specific high school's NCAA-approved core course list before you finalize your schedule each year.

3. Meet the 10/7 Requirement

Ten of your 16 core courses — including seven in English, math, or science — must be completed before the start of your seventh semester (the beginning of senior year). Once you hit that point, those 10 grades are locked in.

Translation: your eligibility path is largely set by the end of junior year.

4. Earn a Minimum 2.3 Core-Course GPA

Your NCAA core-course GPA is calculated only from your approved core courses — not your full transcript, not your weighted GPA.

5. Graduating On Time Matters

If you graduate on time, you may be able to use one additional approved core course completed within a year after graduation.

6. Submit Transcripts and Get Certified

Once your core courses and GPA are set, your counselor uploads your final official transcript and the Eligibility Center completes your certification.

Who Should Be Involved

  • You — track your core courses every year

  • Your high school counselor — confirms your course plan and submits transcripts

  • The compliance office at any school recruiting you

Bottom Line

Division I eligibility is decided years before signing day. Get registered with the Eligibility Center early, confirm your course list with your counselor every year, and track your core-course GPA separately from your report card GPA.
