NCAA Division II Initial Eligibility Requirements — The Complete Breakdown
NCAA Division II Initial Eligibility Requirements — The Complete Breakdown
Division II eligibility follows the same basic framework as Division I — core courses, GPA, certification — but with a few real differences that matter.
The Short Version
Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center
Complete 16 NCAA-approved core courses
Earn a minimum 2.2 core-course GPA
Submit your final transcript and proof of graduation
Receive Academic and Athletics Certification
Division II does not have a 10/7 timing rule — your core courses aren't locked in based on when you complete them relative to senior year.
Breaking Each Requirement Down
1. Register With the NCAA Eligibility Center
Create an account early, so your high school has a place to send transcripts.
2. Complete 16 Core Courses
Division II distribution:
Subject Area: Years Required
English (or native language): 3 years
Math (Algebra I or higher): 2 years
Science: 2 years
Additional English, Math, or Science: 3 years
Social Science: 2 years
Additional core courses (world language, comparative religion, philosophy, etc.): 4 years
3. Earn a Minimum 2.2 Core-Course GPA
Division II's GPA floor is 2.2, slightly more forgiving than Division I's 2.3.
4. No 10/7 Timing Rule
This is the biggest practical difference from Division I — no mid-track deadline.
5. Submit Transcripts and Get Certified
Your counselor submits your final official transcript and proof of graduation.

Bottom Line
Division II eligibility is more forgiving than Division I on paper, but the fundamentals are the same. Register early, confirm your course list yearly.
