NCAA Recruiting Periods Explained — Contact, Evaluation, Quiet, and Dead Periods
The NCAA recruiting calendar isn't one universal schedule.
The Four Period Types
Contact Period
Coaches can do essentially everything: in-person contact, calls, texts, emails, visits.
Evaluation Period
Coaches can watch and assess you but cannot have in-person, off-campus conversations.
Quiet Period
In-person contact is restricted to campus only.
Dead Period
The most restrictive: no in-person recruiting contact or evaluation.
Why This Gets Confusing
Every sport has its own calendar.
Divisions treat this differently — Division III has no dead periods and no quiet periods at all.
Dates shift year to year.
Exceptions stack on top of base periods.
What This Means Practically
Don't assume last year's calendar applies this year.
A dead period doesn't mean recruiting stops.
You can generally reach out to coaches at any time.
Bottom Line
Think of the four period types as a framework, not a fixed calendar.
